Production Notes: Assigning Frequencies to the Four Gods — Deciding Sound from Direction, Season and Colour

The Four Gods — Azure Dragon, Vermillion Bird, White Tiger, Black Tortoise.

Four guardian beasts, one for each direction.

Building a series of tracks around them, the first thing I had to settle was which frequency belonged to which beast.

I could have picked at random. But then I could not have explained my own choices.

So I used the structure the Four Gods already carry: direction, season, and the colours of the five elements.

The design table

This is what it became.

The Four Gods circle the four seasons. Spring, then summer, autumn, winter. I laid the series out to travel that full year.

Why these frequencies

The Black Tortoise (north, winter) got the lowest sound.

North, winter, water, black. The quietest, most downward part of the year.
It starts at 174Hz — the lowest band in the set — and climbs slowly through 285 to 396.

If I was going to make something for sleep, it had to be here.
And indeed, the eight-hour sleep version in this series is the Black Tortoise.

The Vermillion Bird (south, summer) got the brightest.

South, summer, fire, crimson. From 396 up through 639 to 741.
Rising and opening out — it matched the image of wings spreading upward.

The Azure Dragon (spring) had its colour decided first: blue-green shifting to gold.
So the sound follows suit, opening wide from 432 to 888.

In other words, the colour came first and the sound followed. The visual transformation was already fixed, and the audio was written to match it.

Only the White Tiger ended up different from the plan

Honestly:

At the planning stage, the White Tiger was 852 → 528 → 396Hz — a descent.
West, autumn, metal, white. Cutting, deciding. That was presumably the thinking.

But what actually shipped is 285 → 528 → 852Hz — an ascent.

It changed somewhere along the way.

And — there is no record of why.

I can guess. Probably, on hearing it, a descent felt like it simply ended. Ten minutes closing on a low tone leaves a very different aftertaste from one that opens upward before closing.

But that is only my guess now. What I actually thought at the time is gone.

More than the decision itself, failing to record the reason means even you cannot reconstruct it later.
That is the lesson this series drove home hardest.

These days I write down the reason alongside the decision.

A word about the traditional attributions

Each of the Four Gods carries meanings handed down over centuries — the Dragon with growth, the Bird with connection and expression, the Tiger with decisiveness, the Tortoise with health and long life.

These are cultural traditions, things long said about them.

Those words appear in my titles and descriptions, but that does not mean listening produces those outcomes.

There is no scientific confirmation that frequencies do such things. What I make is sound whose atmosphere suits the story — not something that has an effect.

I try to keep that line clear.

Having a table means never having to decide twice

I am glad I built this before starting.

When I begin a new beast, direction, season, colour and frequency are already settled.
So I do not agonise from zero each time.

Reduce the decisions in advance, and at the moment of making, you can concentrate on the sound itself.
